Zinc recyclers take on $17 billion market
The headquarters for a Kiwi start-up that aims to disrupt the US$10 billion zinc recycling industry is two shipping containers in a car park on the University of Canterbury campus.
In the containers, 27-year-old Jonathan Ring and colleagues are scaling up processes that use about 70% less energy than contemporary zinc recycling methods. Their processes also produce up to 95% fewer carbon dioxide emissions, and costs about 45% less than the industry average, Ring claims.
